Message from the FRA

Our club Secretary has received the following communication from the FRA:

The Fell Runners Association relies on volunteers, and the purpose of this e-mail is to ask you to circulate this call for volunteers within your club.

FRA volunteers may serve on the Committee, or help in a whole range of ways in a less formal capacity.  Several Committee members will leave at the next AGM (18th July) having devoted time to the FRA for many years, and these ‘experienced hands’ need to be replaced.  There are also opportunities for members with specific skills or interests to join one of the various sub-committees (listed in the Handbook and the Fellrunner).

We have some key roles to fill, and would also like to increase the representation of younger members, women and members from the North-East or South of the fell running community.

Key skills that the FRA Committee will need are:-

Chairman/Secretary/Treasurer.  There is some flexibility between these roles, but we need to recruit someone with experience of committee work to supplement those existing members staying on the Committee.

UK Athletics Liaison.  This role represents the FRA with UKA, both on the Mountain Running Advisory Group and the UKA Endurance Group, as well as acting as a focal point for UKA (and perhaps EA) relationships.

Editor for the Fellrunner.  This role has already been publicised on the web-site.  The job involves taking overall responsibility for the quality of the Fellrunner, but is mostly about getting interesting material, and keeping abreast of the ‘hot topics’ in fell running.  The mechanical aspects of typesetting and printing are handled by others.

Liaison with Race Organisers.  ROs are at the heart of our sport, and the FRA intends to have named focal points, who can support ROs, particularly on safety aspects, starting with Championship races.

Membership Secretary.  Although we now use the SiEntries system, which simplifies the tasks of keeping member’s data up to date and membership renewals, there is still a lot of administrative work in keeping track of members, ensuring that the Handbook and Fellrunner go the right people, and answering queries.

Manager of the Inter-Counties Fell Championship.  This event is run under the auspices of the Inter-Counties Athletic Union, and is based on a selected fell-race.  The FRA responsibility is to select the race, and to act as a focal point to ensure that county clubs are aware of the event, to coordinate the entries with the county team managers and the race organiser, and to ensure that the Championship overall is a success.

Member representative.  There is always a need for members to serve as Committee Members without specific portfolio, but to be aware of members’ interests and to represent them to the Committee.  This is an active role, which involves seeking out and reporting back on the issues within the fell running community.

Anyone interested in any of these roles should contact the Chair, Secretary or Treasurer or any Committee member (details in the Handbook and Fellrunner) for more information.  Joining the full Committee requires an application to be completed and approved at the AGM, but members can be co-opted onto the relevant sub-Committee at any time.

Thank you for your help
